  3. Health and Safety Commission appoints new chair

The Health and Safety Commission has announced that it has appointed Judith Hackett as its new chair.

People considering purchasing personal protection equipment may be interested to note that Ms Hackett, who succeeds Sir Bill Callaghan, has a great deal of experience in the chemicals industry.

Having served as the director of the Chemistry for Europe project with the Brussels-based European Chemical Industry Council, Ms Hackett will embark upon her new role in October 2007.

Sir Bill said that Ms Hackett's previous role and 'her considerable experience in the chemical industry' should ensure that she is in a strong position to implement the commission's strategy for health and safety in the workplace.

In related news, Walaiti Rathore of legal firm Berryman said that the new Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals legislation, which came into effect last month, places greater responsibility on people using chemicals to ensure that they are safe, reports Farmers Guardian.
