HSE to carry out refurbishment site checks
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that it is to perform spot checks on refurbishment sites across the UK this month.
Inspectors are set to assess projects based on a number of factors, including the organisation of the site, as well as whether obstructions have been placed on walkways or stairwells which could be a risk for staff.
The body has also suggested that it will assess the use of protective measures, including fall arrest equipment, by checking that precautions have been taken to prevent incidents when working at height.
Michael Brown, HM inspector for health and safety, said that it was 'totally unacceptable' for construction workers to be put at risk at work.
He added: 'Sites where health and safety is taken seriously have nothing to fear, but we will root out those that put lives at risk.'
John Lacey, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's construction group chair, recently stated that health and safety is not something that firms in the industry can ignore.
