HSE issues safety reminder for working at height

Falling from height continues to be a major risk for those working in the construction industry, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

This comes after a spot check on refurbishment projects around Stamford Hill in north-east London found that almost half were not putting sufficient safety measures in place.

Mike Williams, principal inspector for HSE's construction division in this area, warned that construction continues to be one of the most dangerous industries in the UK.

"We are very concerned at the number of small sites that are failing to take the most basic precautions to protect workers and members of the public," he added.

This especially applies to issues such as structural stability and a lack of appropriate fall arrest equipment, Mr Williams argued.

HSE chair Judith Hackitt recently praised Britain's strong record on worker health and safety, but warned companies not to get complacent over the coming years.
