  3. HSE announces spot checks

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced plans to hold a series of random spot checks at refurbishment sites in Teesside.

Following on from the organisation's checks in February, the next wave of inspections are expected to take place over the course of next week.

HSE inspectors are expected to consider whether sites are well organised, as well as if the workforce is adequately aware of risk control measures.

The spot checks may also touch upon the use of personal protection equipment, as the experts plan to consider whether precautions have been taken when staff are working at height.

Jonathan Wills, a HSE inspector, said: ' We will not tolerate poor standards and will take appropriate enforcement action proactively as well as when an accident occurs.

'Our advice to those who work in the refurbishment sector is to plan work, use competent workers and if working at height use the right equipment and use it safely.'

The HSE is already carrying out spot checks at sites in Newcastle this week.
