Food industry safety campaign may encourage use of PPE

Businesses operating in the food and drink sector are being encouraged to improve their focus on workplace safety through a new campaign.

Backed by Aviva Risk Management Solutions (ARMS), the Safety on the Menu scheme will enable firms to access guides from the internet, concerning health and safety issues.

In a development that might encourage the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as protective gloves, Aviva has cited figures from the Health and Safety Executive which highlight the risk of injury those in the food and drink sector face.

Health and safety consultant at ARMS Helen Toll suggests that manual handling is just one issue that needs to be addressed.

She stated: 'Many food and drinking manufacturing processes produce high levels of noise and serious machinery accidents, particularly during cleaning and maintenance work, continue to be an all too frequent occurrence.'

Meanwhile, PPE, such as protective gloves, is also to be looked at in the new Frost & Sullivan study Americas Oil and Gas PPE Markets, which Research and Markets is making available.
