First aid kits for farms
Every farmer should be armed with emergency and first aid kits, according to an agriculture expert.
Agrosecurity and dairy farm management consultant Dean Ross says that exposure to heavy equipment, long hours and toxic substances makes it imperative for farm workers to develop a safety culture on site.
Mr Ross says that because of the different types of hazards and injuries that can occur, it is important to prepare kits for different situations including chemical burns and fractures.
Writing on the Cattle Network website, Mr Ross said that "because accidental injuries and other health emergencies can occur at any time, every farm operation should be prepared with first-aid and emergency kits".
Agriculture is consistently one of the most dangerous industries in the UK.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, farming accounts for 15 to 20 per cent of workplace fatalities, yet less than 1.5 per cent of the working population is employed in agriculture.
