  3. Motorists warned about wearing wrong shoes when driving

Drivers are being urged to consider their footwear choices when behind the wheel, particularly during hot summer days when flip-flops are popular.

Dorry Potter of National Scrap Car reminds motorists that according to the Highway Code, footwear and clothing should not interfere with the operation of vehicle controls. If a driver has an accident and unsuitable footwear is considered a contributing factor, they could be charged with driving without due care and attention, which carries a maximum penalty of a £5,000 fine and nine points on their license. In serious cases, the driver may even be banned from driving.

To ensure safe driving, it is best to wear safety trainers that fit comfortably and have a flat sole that allows for even pressure on the brake and accelerator. The heel should be able to pivot easily from one pedal to another.

Flip-flops and mules are not recommended as they do not have secure heels and can interfere with braking and accelerating. Slippers, whether slip-ons or enclosed, fit too loosely and their flexible soles limit traction on the pedals.

High heels prevent smooth pivoting of the heel between the brake and accelerator, making it difficult to drive safely. It is also not advisable to drive without shoes, as adequate pressure cannot be applied to the brakes.

For workers who need to wear work boots, it is recommended to change into trainers when driving, as their size and strength can make it difficult to accurately feel the pedals.
