  2. Spill Control Explained

A spill can be defined as the unintentional release of a liquid substance out of its container sufficient in size and nature to present a threat to the environment and/or people.

Prevention and protection are the two main ways to tackle spills or leaks. The first stage is identifying any potential risks, the second stage is having the equipment and trained workforce to mitigate against any event.

Current legislation is in place to protect people and the environment from accidental spills of hazardous liquids, oil, fuel or chemicals that can cause serious health and safety and environmental problems. If spillages are uncontrolled and damaging consequences occur, then severe penalties can be issued to your business.

We provide a comprehensive range of Spill Control Products, Site Surveys and Training to help you to protect people, the environment and your business, reducing the impact that a spill would cause.

An Environmental Management System is a series of day-to-day processes and systems that need to be put in place to ensure that you do not have a negative impact on the local environment. A FREE Site Survey,  carried out by our fully trained partner in spill control NPS UK Lubetech, provides you with a no-obligation written report detailing their observations and presenting practical and cost-effective recommendations where necessary to keep you compliant.

Any Primary container with a storage capacity of over 200 litres present in any industrial, commercial, or institutional site, holding all types of oil (except waste oil), is required to have a secondary containment spill prevention method in place. A bund has to form a container around the tank capable of holding 110% of the contents of the oil stored or 25% of the total volume (depending on which is greater).

Then, the two main methods of dealing with spills, dependant on the size and type of spill, are:

Absorbents - designed to contain and recover a spillage;

Loose absorbents - such as clay granules and speciality powders, tend to be used on smaller spills.

Available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, weights and format to absorb different fluid types. Globally the three most recognised colours are:

White – OIL ONLY - absorb only oil-based fluids, best used outdoors as they won’t recover any water-based fluids.

Grey – MAINTENANCE – absorbs both water and oil-based fluids at the same time. These are the best choice in most indoor spill situations.

Yellow – CHEMICAL – used to clean up unknown, corrosive or aggressive chemical spills. These can be used indoors or out.

Absorbent Constructions

How an absorbent is constructed will affect its durability, wicking performance (the rate at which fluid is drawn up into the absorbent) and also its slip resistance if being used as a floor covering.

Unbonded – meltblown made by simply melting a polypropylene resin, then forming the very fine fibres into a continuous mat. This is then cut into pads or rolls.

- Fast absorption but limited durability

- Not perforated

- Available in an Oil only format

Sonic Bonded – made the same as unbonded but in addition is passed through sonic heads, fusing the fibres together at small points.

- Stronger than unbonded

- Perforated

- Bond points are approx. 5% of the pad – offering some lint control

Single Laminated

– best all-around construction. Sonically attaching a thin layer of ‘no-lint’ spun-bond material to the top surface of the meltblown core.

- Greatly reduces the linting

- Strongest option

Absorbent Weights and Formats

Meltblown is available in light, medium and heavy weights:

• socks and minibooms to contain a spillage area

• rolls, pads and pillows to recover the spillage.

Spill Kits To accommodate different onsite needs Spill Kits come in a variety of formats Portable Spill Kits: idea for transporting absorbents to a spill site. Compact and easily stored on board vehicles or craft. Clip-Top Vinyl carrier bags are durable and can be re-stocked. Featuring a combination of pads, socks and waste bags.

Static Spill Kits: best located where spills are possible or more likely to occur. Includes a round bin with a detachable lid, pads, socks and waste bags

Wheeled Spill Kits: ideal for moving a larger amount of absorbents to the site of a spill, with a hinged lid. Featuring a combination of pads, socks and waste bags, plus larger sizes include pillows, floor signs and hazmat tape. (Codes: 454255, 496626, 496628)

Mostly used for smaller spillages. Whilst granular absorbents still have a use they are usually outperformed by absorbent pads and rolls. Absorbent Recycled Clay Granules - Made from recycled gypsum - The most environmentally friendly traditional granules (Code: 674515)

- Extra tough for constant use externally

- Fully washable for repeat applications

- Oil resistant - Replaceable liner

- Comes in a convenient portable and durable clip-close carrier bag

(Codes: 454369, 454372000, 496647)

Quality on-site solution available in three sizes, ideal for construction sites or locations that have plant equipment. The Sit Mat allow the free-flow of filtered water through the products side walls, eliminating the requirement of regular decanting of secondary containment trays when deployed outdoors.
