  3. A Guide To Builders’ Grip Gloves
Builders Grip Gloves Guide

Builders can take on such a wide variety of tasks on building sites that the equipment and clothing they wear must be versatile in the protection it offers. Gloves especially need to strike the balance between usability and protectiveness to be fit for purpose.

Builders’ gloves need to be strong, durable, and comfortable, but still lightweight enough to preserve dexterity and prevent them from causing difficulty when working with tools or carrying things.

Choosing the right builder's grip gloves is a central part in providing the correct PPE for your workers – keeping them safe and maximising efficiency on building sites.

When should builders’ gloves be worn?

Gloves can provide protection for a wide range of construction tasks, including:
  • - Bricklaying
  • - Woodwork
  • - Operating heavy machinery
  • - Working with glass
  • - Heavy duty tasks

These are all common jobs on building and construction sites so finding the right-hand protection PPE that is versatile enough to protect workers in all situations is essential. Good builders’ gloves should be able to protect workers during general handling activities, use of everyday tools, and while working with a variety of materials.

Elements of builders’ gloves

A versatile pair of builders’ gloves will usually contain a few key elements that are essential for hand protection. They must be comfortable on the inside, so they’ll often have a polycotton lining, but the outside has to be sturdy enough to be suitable for a range of construction tasks so they’re often made or coated primarily with latex. To further strengthen the construction and improve comfort and dexterity, most builders’ grip gloves feature seamless designs and are breathable, despite their latex external coating.

Employer responsibilities

The construction industry involves a wide range of health and safety risks, and employers, therefore, have a number of responsibilities, including:

  • - Providing PPE equipment such as gloves for employees to use free of charge
  • - Providing appropriate training to ensure that employees understand the importance of PPE equipment and that they know when items such as gloves should be worn
  • - Replacing protective equipment as and when necessary without waiting until it’s needed

Hand protection regulations

As with all protective equipment, there are some specific regulations that you need to be aware of in relation to hand protection, including:

  • - Personal Protective Equipment Regulations(2002) – According to these regulations, employers have a responsibility to provide PPE equipment such as gloves to protect workers’ safety, as well as replacing them when needed.
  • - EN 420 – This European standard lays out the requirements protective gloves must meet in order to be deemed fit for purpose. It covers a range of factors, including the quality of glove construction, the number of dexterity gloves must allow, and regulations for labels and packaging.
