Circular saw safety advice issued

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued guidance on the safe use of circular saws.

In 2008/2009 woodworking had an accident rate 17 per cent above the manufacturing average and is the only industry where machinery accidents cause more injuries than slips and trips, according to HSE figures.

Most accidents occur when workers come into contact with the moving parts of power tools like circular saws.

Circular saws can also produce small, sharp-pointed off-cuts, which can potentially jam the machine or be thrown at the operator.

These must be regularly removed with a push-stick, which must also be used to feed the last 300mm of a cut into the saw so that hands are kept well clear of the moving blade.

The saws themselves must be braked and stop within ten seconds and a top guard should be attached to the dust extraction device.

When operating circular saws, workers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as eye protection and hand protection, where necessary.
