2. Choose the appropriate type of shaft depending on its strength
3. Select the correct blade type for the job in-hand
4. Choose the appropriate blade size
 
SQUARE MOUTH – for shovelling, backfilling, concrete mixing, and working with tarmac
• TAPER – for backfilling, concrete mixing, and working with tarmac
• ROUND – for use on gravel and other loose materials as its round point allows it to pierce more efficiently than other blade types
• TRENCH – for digging out narrow trenches for cables, etc
• CABLE - for digging out narrow trenches for cables, etc
• DRAINER (Newcastle) – for digging drain channels and post holes
• GRAFTING - for clay digging and heavy ground breaking
• FORK - for digging pipe and drain channels, and use on heavy clay or stoney soil.
