Working at height requires additional safety measures

Putting the right safety infrastructure in place is an important part of carrying out work at height, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has argued.HSE inspector Damien Milbourne pointed out that the "clear risks" presented by working above the ground underlines the necessity of providing fall arrest equipment for employees.
Speaking after an apprentice electrician in Swindon sustained back injuries while working in a loft, the inspector urged companies to be aware of the legislation relating to this issue.
"Suitable platforms or coverings or guardrails" are vital in keeping workers safe in situations like this, according to Mr Milbourne.
This is especially important when working near exposed joists, as these present a further risk to employees, concluded the HSE spokesman.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 state that any work carried out above the ground must be properly organised and planned beforehand, with all potential risks assessed and suitable safety equipment provided.
