Portsmouth firm fined for poor safety
Workplace safety was once again brought to the floor following an incident in Surrey.
Majestic Construction, a Portsmouth based firm, has been fined £8,000 in addition to paying £5,473 in costs following a passer-by being struck by a falling masonry block.
The victim fortunately came out of the incident with just a cut and bruised shoulder, but has since suffered muscle spasms as a result. A health and safety executive inspector said that the man was lucky the block missed his head, remarking that “he could well have been killed”.
Health and safety in the workplace, especially in construction jobs, is vitally important. It is imperative to make sure that employees and indeed members of the public are protected against possible accidents.
Making sure equipment – such as head protection, safety boots and safety gloves – is not damaged or out of working order is imperative. Where this incident happened to a member of the public, in a different circumstance, it could easily have affected a fellow employee.
