Personal protective equipment safeguards against hazards
Wearing personal protective equipment is vital if people are to safeguard themselves against major hazards, such as chemicals and other irritants, one source has pointed out.
Rob Kurtz, writing for Becker's ASC Review, said that companies need to take steps to ensure that any employee working with dangerous equipment or substances is provided with the proper safeguards, such as safety gloves and boots.
In addition, he advised workers in the medical sector to be aware of any potential risk and make sure they are properly kitted out before attempting anything which may place their hands in danger.
'Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safe work practices for assessed hazards; for example when handling hot items use gloves, and do not open autoclaves or sterilisers until items are sufficiently cooled,' he advised.
Recently, the Health and Safety Executive warned that it is vital that companies give out personal protective clothing to ensure their employees are protected from harmful substances.
