  3. PPE company announces new branch

Personal protection equipment provider Arco has announced that it is to establish a new branch in Basildon to support businesses in Essex as pressure increases on them to take more responsibility for health and safety issues.

The company stated that this responsibility has grown as the number of routine health and safety inspections has fallen in recent years.

It said the branch would not only provide equipment to customers but also health and safety advice, with the varied base of customers it would serve including construction companies working on the Thames Gateway development and the London 2012 Olympics.

News of extra support becoming available for companies needing to comply with health and safety issues, including personal protective equipment, comes at a time when the issue has been highlighted by calls for action against employers on whose construction projects workers have been killed.

Transport and General Workers Union general secretary Tony Woodley spoke over the increase in accident statistics in the industry and pledged that the union would 'do our damnest' to ensure legal action could be taken against bosses in these cases, reports Builder and Engineer online.
