Outdoor clothing needed as cold weather alert is issued

The Met Office has issued a cold weather alert for parts of eastern England as the current cold snap continues.

The current cold spell has seen motorists struggling with black ice and there is a yellow alert ('be aware') in place for most of Scotland and northern England for slippery conditions on the roads.

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) is providing employers with an advisory booklet on how to deal with issues that winter weather can bring.

As well as causing travel disruption that can prevent staff from getting in to work, ACAS is warning firms to expect more staff to be calling in sick with cold and flu and that stress and depression also increase at this time of year.

The cold weather is especially inconvenient for the thousands of people in the UK who work outside and it is important that employers provide their staff with sufficient outdoor clothing to keep workers comfortable.

Fleeces and bodywarmers can protect against the cold, while coveralls and PVC gear keeps workers dry.
