  3. Organisation launches drive for airport safety

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has launched a poster campaign to raise awareness about the hazards that an airport presents during the turnaround of aeroplanes.

The IOSH's Aviation and Aerospace Group has produced a collection of 11 posters designed to educate and inform workers. Each poster focuses on a particular potential issue.

The dangers covered highlight hazards in every part of the airport apron, which is the area where aircraft park, unload, refuel and get boarded.

A high-risk and high-activity area, there are cleaning trucks, catering vehicles, refuelling rigs, maintenance personnel and baggage crews all working at the same time. Risks including excessive noise and the presence of hazardous substances are always present.

Also covering working with heavy machinery, the posters explain the necessity for operational crews wearing adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as, ear defenders, protective gloves and goggles, and high-vis workwear.

Health and safety figures at airports have shown the majority of incidents occur during airport turnaround – when a plane lands and is cleaned, refuelled and prepared for takeoff again.

The chair of the IOSH Aviation and Aerospace Group, Ross Coppolo, said that everyone in the airport and health and safety industries is aware of the problem and the needs to tackle it.

He explained:

“The poster campaign is aimed at all apron users including airport and aerodrome operators, airlines and ground service providers with the objectives of identifying the range of significant hazards.”

As well as focusing at the most common injuries caused on an apron, the posters will also look at the potential consequences of accidents and how risks can be minimized.
