Offshore sector encouraged to increase health and safety focus

Organisations working in the country's offshore sector have been encouraged to improve their focus on issues relating to health and safety.

Users of protective gear such as safety boots might be interested to note that between 2008/09 and the 2009/10 period, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) believes that the offshore industry's combined fatal and major injury rate went up from 106 to 192.

The HSE offshore division head Steve Walker feels that further efforts must be made to boost the sector's health and safety rates in the coming months.

He stated: 'This year's overall health and safety picture is simply not good enough.

'The industry has shown it can do better and it must do in future.'

Earlier in the month, the HSE also gave its support to an agriculture safety event which took place in Cannington, Somerset.

Practical safety guidance was made available to farmers during the day.
