New asbestos regulations come into force

People dealing with asbestos have a set of new guidelines to follow after the introduction of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Introduced on April 6th, the rules are an update on the previous regulations that had been laid down for dealing with the harmful substance.

In addition to previous rules, which meant anyone removing the substance had to be specially trained in how to do it successfully and wear respiratory protection throughout the work, the new guidelines means the regulatory body needs to be notified of some non-licensed work.

Brief written records also need to be kept for these works, including details such as the workers who have been involved with the removal of the substance and if they were likely to have been exposed to it.

Further changes are also set to come into force in April 2015, with all workers and self-employed people who are working with the substance required to be under the surveillance of a doctor.
