  3. Health and Safety Week launched for second year

During June, an annual event was held to promote safe working practices in Britain.

Running for its second year, Health and Safety Week took place from the 15th to 19th of June. When introduced in 2014, the event celebrated 40 years since the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974. For 2015, however, the occasion focused on encouraging more employers to improve wellbeing in the workplace.

According to statistics, the number of deaths in the workplace has currently been reduced to the lowest on record in 20 years. However, it is believed that more can be done to achieve fewer accidents and fatalities at work.

In 2012, 2,535 people passed away due to being exposed to asbestos in the past, the cause of death being a cancer called mesothelioma that has been linked to inhaling the substance. Also, over 1.2 million people have an illness that is connected to their work.

Although PPE has to be worn to prevent exposure to harmful substances like asbestos, accidents are still occurring. Health and Safety Week 2015 was therefore launched to encourage employers to initiate programmes and initiatives at work throughout the year, with an aim to raise awareness of the issues.

The director of OSH Global, Heather Beach, stated that 13,000 fatalities occur every year as a result of workplace health issues. Beach added that more needed to be done, including training professionals in order to deal with workplace health awareness. Since 1974, the number of employee deaths has dropped by 80%.
