  3. HSE calls for collaboration in waste sector health and safety

According to the head of Agriculture, Waste and Recycling at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Rick Brunt, small and medium size enterprises require support and collaboration from the whole of the waste sector in order to improve their record of health and safety and avoid serious incidents.

Brunt was speaking at the annual conference for Health and Safety in Waste Management, hosted by the Organics Recycling Group. He stated that although significant progress had been made within the industry, more needed to be done to improve the waste sector, as the sector has a high death rate that needs to be addressed.

Brunt presented 'Helping Great Britain Work Well' at the conference, a strategy aimed at improving health and safety policies in the UK. He added that the country had become a leader in the health and safety industry. However, he warned that more needed to be done, citing statistics provided by the organisation regarding fatalities. In 2015-16, the waste and recycling sector had six deaths in the workplace, second only to the agricultural industry.

To improve health and safety across the waste sector, Brunt called for all businesses across the board to engage and collaborate, thereby helping those smaller companies which may need help to improve safety standards. The HSE has started by making legislation and guidance easier to understand and access.

For many businesses, health and safety starts with the provision and use of PPE and specialist workwear.
