Gloves one of the most crucial elements of PPE

The use of hand protection is 'one of the most crucial elements' of personal protective equipment (PPE), according to a global glove manufacturer.

Chris Gordon, the sales director of Mapa Spontex, made the comment after research found that 11 per cent of companies reported that their workers were reluctant to wear hand protection.

Manufactuingtalk reports that workers cited the loss of dexterity and sensitivity as particular reasons why they sometimes decided to go without gloves while working in the manufacturing sector.

The study also found that ten per cent of managers have taken no action when they have caught employees not using hand protection.

Speaking to the website about the research, Mr Gordon said: 'Gloves are arguably one of the most crucial elements of PPE, since practically any job involves the use of the hands.

'Workers will continue to be opposed or ambivalent to glove wearing if their managers continue to treat it with such disregard.'

The Health and Safety Executive recently urged construction firms to follow safety legislation after a company was prosecuted after four workers were injured when a floor collapsed.
