External inspections could ensure high safety standards

Allowing external companies to come in to a workplace and check the safety standards could help to ensure employees are working in a safe environment.

Jane White, research and information services manager at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, explained that most companies will be fine with having someone who works for the firm to check that all the safety standards are being met.

But for others, an external inspection can make sure that not only are the right safety shoes and protective workwear being used, but that staff are working in a safe environment and using equipment properly.

"Even if you have someone in-house, you are still going to want at times that external influence. It is that fresh pair of eyes over your business," Ms White added.

Operating with the right safety measures in place can prevent companies from seeing their staff seriously injured and facing a court case, with the Health and Safety Executive recently highlighting the case of a worker who fell from height as the correct barriers were not in place.
