Construction event to advise safety gloves wearers

An upcoming construction event staged by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will help to highlight the benefits of protective boots and other protective equipment, showing how simple measures can potentially save lives.

Taking place at Borders Union Showground on September 29th, the event will invite members of the construction industry to find out how wearing safety gloves, helmets and other protective gear can cut the number of people who are killed or seriously injured in the sector each year.

Around 150 people are expected to attend on the day, which will feature presentations from industry experts on a variety of hazards including asbestos awareness, working at height, safe trench work and fire safety.

HSE principal inspector Iain Brodie commented: 'Accidents on construction sites are often serious and can be fatal - it remains one of the most dangerous industries. It is vital that managers and company owners understand how to reduce risks on their sites.'

According to HSE statistics, in the last five years, 49 construction workers have been killed and nearly 7,000 have been seriously injured in Scotland alone.
