  3. Building materials supplier joins asbestos campaign

Timber and building materials supplier Jewson has joined forces with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on its asbestos campaign.

It has been revealed that workers at the company's brand in Carmarthen are supporting the Hidden Killer scheme by helping to warn tradesman about the importance of taking precautions against the dangers of the material.

Research by the HSE, which highlights the importance of respiratory protection, found that nearly 240 men in south-west and west Wales died from illnesses caused by asbestos between 1981 and 2005.

Chantal Nicholls, HSE principal inspector for construction, said: 'We need to educate tradesmen about how asbestos and its dangers are relevant to them.

'We want them to change the way they work so that they don't put their lives at risk.'

The HSE has revealed it recently carried out spot checks on development projects in Waltham Forest.

According to the body, work on 12 of the 16 sites in the region was stopping, with five improvement notices also provided to contractors involved.
