'No excuse' for lax health and safety measures

Companies that are lax in the health and safety measures they put in place for their workforce have no excuse due to the wealth of information that is available.

Commenting on a recent case involving workers in a mushroom growing centre, health and safety executive inspector John Claxton said the group had been disturbed by the poor standards of protection that were in place.

He noted that despite some companies paying millions of pounds to renovate their sites, they will often fall short of getting in the right equipment to keep their staff safe.

"There is plenty of free advice and guidance available from HSE to help businesses comply with the law and keep people safe. HSE will not hesitate to take action against companies failing to comply with the law," Mr Claxton said.

Measures to make sure staff are properly protected while they go about their work can be as simple as providing proper safety boots or outdoor clothing, depending on the nature of work.
